The recent storm snow is capping a variety of weak surfaces, including near-surface facets, surface hoar, and several types of crust. We don’t yet know how reactive this setup is or whether the slab–weak layer combination is capable of producing large avalanches. At a minimum, small slides are likely to break at the interface between the most recent 1–2” of dense snow and the fluffier snow below. Hand pits and stomping on safe test slopes can clue you in to this potential problem.
The potential for larger avalanches should also factor into your travel plans, especially if you experience audible collapses or identify buried surface hoar in a hand pit (look for a grey stripe within the upper foot of the snowpack). Yesterday in the Swan Range, we remotely triggered an avalanche on buried surface hoar from the flat ridge above.
Increasing wind speeds yesterday afternoon, combined with recent and ongoing warming, have stiffened the surface slab, which may increase both the reactivity and size of human-triggered avalanches today. If you’re traveling on slopes with more than 6” of recent snow, carefully consider the consequences of even a small slide. Expect avalanche danger to increase with elevation and wind exposure.

This avalanche is from a previous season, but it is the type of slide that could fail naturally or be triggered by a rider today. This problem will be exacerbated if the recent snow rests on a weak layer of facets or surface hoar.
