Elkhorns

Conditions are generally stable and large avalanches are unlikely. Assess the snow surface conditions before committing to anything consequential and continue to use safe travel techniques.

In some locations, last night's warm temperatures may have prevented a refreeze. If you plan to use avalanche terrain and you find moist snow, closely monitor how far you sink and exit if you find slush several inches deep. Loose wet avalanche activity is unlikely due to the previous warming the snowpack has already experienced. 

Concerning snowpack structure exists in the Elkhorns and outlying areas of the Wallowas. 

These concerns exist in the Elkhorns around the 1/3 crust buried one to two feet down, and in the Wallowas where the total snowpack is shallower than 4 feet with a weak 12/18 crust. This is unlikely to be an issue until the snowpack receives a new load.

The WAC is hosting an Avalanche Rescue and Education Course on Sunday, February 8th, at 9:00 AM at Salt Creek Summit Sno-Park. Open to skiers, snowmobilers, snowshoers, and anyone interested in learning more about avalanche safety and practicing companion rescue skills. This course is donation-based, and we encourage you to contribute whatever you feel is appropriate.
