Highlights

Triggering a large avalanche 2-4 feet deep on steep, shady slopes above 8,500 feet is possible. The danger is highest on slopes facing west, through north, through east. Elevated hazard also exists in steep rocky terrain or slopes previously loaded by the wind. Evaluate steep slopes carefully. 

Monitor for warming snow surfaces below 9,000 feet. Loose snow avalanches will become possible on very steep sunny slopes as the day warms, and could entrain more snow than you expect.   Move to shadier slopes if you see rollerballs or encounter moist or slushy snow.

    Weak snow from January and early February is buried 2-4 feet deep. While it is becoming less likely that you will trigger an avalanche that fails on weak, faceted snow, keep your guard up above 8,500’ on northerly slopes and in steep rocky terrain. You might not get any warning signs, like collapsing, before triggering a large avalanche. Careful assessment of the snowpack is required before committing to steep terrain. 

    Keep an eye out for isolated wind slabs at upper elevations from increased overnight northerly winds. These will be small and shallow but might catch you off guard and easily knock you off your feet above hazardous terrain.

    A very large skier triggered avalanche that occurred near Phillips Pass on 2/21/2026. The 5th rider on the slope triggered the smaller slab near the ridge that then triggered a much larger avalanche below the cliff band.

    Yesterday, snow surfaces below 8,500 feet were wet from warm temperatures and rain at low-elevations. Below 8,000 feet, many aspects contained isothermal snow. Overnight temperatures at 8,500 feet dipped below freezing as skies cleared, but it was not a hard freeze in some locations. Expect crusts to thaw quickly in the sun today. Wet snow avalanche activity is likely on very steep, low and mid-elevation slopes facing the sun and could entrain more snow than you expect. If you see rollerballs or encounter slushy snow, move to shadier aspects and minimize time spent under steep sunny slopes.
