Highlights

Very dangerous avalanche conditions exist. Large to very large avalanches are likely as snow, wind, and rain overload a weak, faceted snowpack. Avalanches could fail up to 5' deep. Natural avalanches are likely—avoid avalanche terrain.

MONDAY OUTLOOK: Avalanche danger remains High. Human-triggered avalanches are very likely and could be large and destructive, with natural avalanches still possible during continued loading. Avoid avalanche terrain and runout zones.

    Recent Avalanches:  Recent avalanche activity highlights dangerous conditions in Chugach State Park. Multiple human-triggered  persistent slab and wind slab avalanches have been reported, with crowns 1' to 5' deep. Human-triggered avalanches on Peak 3, Flattop, Glen Alps Recreation Area and Peak 2 show these slabs are sensitive and capable of producing large avalanches. A group was also caught in an avalanche in Falls Creek on April 17, with two people injured. Primilary information can be found in this acticle.  Earlier this week, several wet avalanches were reported, including large slides on Harp Mountain and Rusty Point

    Several layers of weak, faceted snow are buried in the snowpack. Recent snow, wind, and rain are adding stress to these layers. This could cause large to very large avalanches up to 5' deep. Avalanches may break above you and spread across wide areas. Human-triggered avalanches are very likely, and natural avalanches are likely during more snow, wind, or warming. This problem can be hard to see and avoid. Stay off steep slopes and connected terrain.

    WET LOOSE: Temperatures are continuing to warm, even with overcast skies. Rain at lower elevations is adding moisture to the snowpack and weakening the surface. This could lead to wet loose avalanches on steep slopes, especially below the rain line. These avalanches may start small but can pick up mass and run far.  Natural wet loose avalanches are likely where rain is falling.

    Strong winds are moving snow and building slabs on leeward slopes, especially near ridgelines. These slabs may be easy to trigger and could produce avalanches up to 1–2' deep. Watch for smooth, rounded pillows of snow and areas where the snow feels stiff or hollow. Human-triggered avalanches are likely, and natural avalanches are possible during continued loading. Avoid steep, wind-loaded slopes and areas below them.
