Highlights

As the day progresses warm temperatures will be increasing the wet snow avalanche hazard by creating areas of unstable snow on steep slopes. The general avalanche hazard will be low at all elevations during the early morning hours. At the mid and upper elevations it will increase to moderate after snow surfaces soften. It will increase to considerable at the upper elevations during the warmest portion of the day. Cornices are large and may also become unstable. Cornice failures could trigger large wet slab avalanches. Monitor conditions and get off of and out from under steep terrain after significant warming has occurred.

    As the day warms wet loose slides will become likely on steep terrain features and wet slab avalanches will become possible. These wet slides could release naturally or be triggered by skiers or riders. Wet loose slides will pose their greatest threat in confined terrain and very steep couloirs where small slides can quickly grow and entrain significant amounts of snow. Wet slab avalanches are most likely to be triggered by the failure of a cornice. Cornice failures could occur naturally or be caused by the weight of a person. Be mindful of both the terrain that you are on and the terrain above you.

Avalanche Discussion

Skies will be clear overnight and through the morning hours. Clouds will be on the increase later in the day ahead of an approaching cold front. Temperatures will drop into the upper 20s and 30s tonight and rise into the 40s, 50s and 60s on Sunday. Winds will back to the southwest and increase to 15 miles per hour during the day.The general avalanche hazard will be LOW in the early morning hours, increase to MODERATE after snow surfaces soften and increase to CONSIDERABLE during the warmest portion of the day. Wet slides are possible on steep terrain features. Wet loose and wet slab avalanches could release naturally or be human triggered. Cornices are large and could fail naturally of from the weight of a person. Large cornice failures could trigger large wet slab avalanches. Monitor conditions and get off of and out from under steep slopes after significant warming has occurred.
