Snow, finally... Expect 8cm of snow Sunday night and possibly another 7cm on Monday. Monday will be mostly -10c in the alpine and cooling off in the evening. Winds will be West at 40km/hr.  

Tuesday night is expected to drop down to -30c.

Snowpack Summary

All the of wind slabs out there at tree line and in the alpine will be covered with this new snow arriving. Even though it is not a lot, it is coming in with wind so be on the lookout for new softer wind slabs, especially near ridges and gullies. There could also be some sluffing on steeper slopes that were previously wind hammered. The hazard could change if more snow and wind materializes than forecasted.

  • Be careful with wind slabs, especially in steep, unsupported and/or convex terrain features.
  • Pay attention to the wind, once it starts to blow fresh sensitive wind slabs are likely to form.

Problems

Wind Slabs

Wind Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) formed by the wind. Wind typically transports snow from the upwind sides of terrain features and deposits snow on the downwind side. Wind slabs are often smooth and rounded and sometimes sound hollow, and can range from soft to hard. Wind slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
