Avalanche Summary

No new avalanches have been reported.

Reports have been limited. Please consider submitting your observations to the Mountain Information Network.

Snowpack Summary

By the morning of November 29 up to 30 cm could overlie variable snow surfaces, including small facets and/or surface hoar in sheltered areas and heavily wind-affected snow in exposed terrain.

Two surface hoar layers can be found in the mid pack, one down 30 to 55 cm and another down 45 to 85 cm at treeline.

A rain crust from early November is buried 60 to 90 cm deep and seems to be bonding well to overlying layers.

Alpine snow depths vary greatly across the region and from aspect to aspect.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Don't let storm day fever lure you into consequential terrain.
  • Be aware of the potential for larger than expected storm slabs due to buried surface hoar.
  • Watch for newly formed and reactive wind slabs as you transition into wind-affected terrain.

Problems

Storm Slabs

Storm Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer (a slab) of new snow that breaks within new snow or on the old snow surface. Storm-slabs typically last between a few hours and few days (following snowfall). Storm-slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
