The scenery is breath taking. That's about it right now. This is the time of year to stay vigilant with solar slopes breaking down through out the day, especially if there is no wind. Enjoy the travel days

A lot of the same these days. Cooler mornings warming up to +10 in the Valley's. Sunday should be mostly clear again with increasing cloud in the late afternoon. Winds will taper off in the evening. And No, no snow in the forecast....

Snowpack Summary

This morning had a good solid refreeze which helped to lock everything in place. While air temps stayed below zero, the sun is starting to have some heat. We are finding a 1cm sun crust up to 2000m on S-W aspects We haven't had any snow for a long time, and as such we've seen very little change to our snowpack as a whole. Windslabs are still widespread in most areas and remain our biggest avalanche problem. 

Terrain and Travel

  • Avoid exposure to steep, sun exposed slopes, especially when the solar radiation is strong.
  • Be careful with wind slabs, especially in steep, unsupported and/or convex terrain features.

Problems

Wind Slabs

Wind Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) formed by the wind. Wind typically transports snow from the upwind sides of terrain features and deposits snow on the downwind side. Wind slabs are often smooth and rounded and sometimes sound hollow, and can range from soft to hard. Wind slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
