If the forecasted storm arrives, the danger will rise, increasing the potential for large avalanches to occur on the Valentine's layer. See our Facebook page for a picture of a recent avalanche that occured on this layer on Mt. Rundle.

Avalanche Problems

Wind Slabs

10-20 cm of snow along with strong W winds are forecasted for Tuesday. Smaller avalanches initiated with this new snow have the potential to step down to the Valentines layer, which would result in large, destructive avalanches.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Likely - Very Likely

Expected Size: 1 - 2

Persistent Slabs

Down 70-150cm, the Valentines surface hoar is producing harder shears; however, a remotely triggered size 2.5 avalanche today on an E aspect near Healy Pass shows that it is still possible for a skier to trigger this layer.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: All elevations.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 2 - 4
