New snow and wind will create fresh wind slabs on unusual aspects Thursday. We continue to recommend avoiding any complex terrain with exposure to large avalanche paths. We can confirm a dangerous snowpack exists for areas north of I-90. Stay safe and keep your terrain selections simple until the pattern changes or we receive more specific information.

Discussion

Another round of snow (5-8 inches) and E-SE winds will build new wind slabs near and above treeline Thursday. New wind slab avalanches will likely be touchy and require you to avoid steep wind-loaded terrain. Bear in mind, east winds will load unusual aspects, so pay attention to loading patterns.

Deeper avalanche concerns persist in the Cascades East South zone where we received significant snowfall over the last few days.

We are recommending backcountry travelers continue to use extra caution and choose conservative terrain during this period of elevated avalanche danger. Avoid steep open slopes greater than 30 degrees, especially near and below ridges where wind transported snow exists. Large avalanches releasing to the 2/8 interface (most likely a thin crust with old weak snow above it), and may be triggered from lower angled terrain well below. Cracking or whumphing of the snow is a clear warning sign to retreat to simple terrain without overhead exposure to large avalanche paths.

Dangerous avalanche conditions have been confirmed in the adjacent East Slopes Central zone north of I-90. Read the East Central zone forecast for the most complete information.

Forecast Schedule and No Rating

At this time, we do not have enough specific snowpack information to issue an avalanche hazard rating for the East Slopes South zone. However, even when No Rating is applied, applicable avalanche conditions and backcountry travel advice will be provided throughout the season. When weather systems produce very dangerous avalanche conditions in adjacent zones, NWAC will issue an avalanche warning for this zone as well.
