Forecast Snow Stability: The old snowpack will remain firm and will be icy in exposed locations; stability of the old snow will be generally good. Strong winds overnight will form unstable windslab in wind sheltered locations, mainly above 900 metres. Steep slopes with a South through West to North-Westerly aspect and sheltered summit gullies will be particularly affected. Other areas may be affected by cross-loading. Fragile cornices may form above these locations. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: North-Easterly gales on Monday night will decrease becoming fresh variable for a time. By morning winds will be North-Westerly to Northerly, moderate to fresh. Snow showers will affect most levels. The freezing level will be around 300 metres. Observed Weather Influences: Rain and wet snow affected the area overnight. A return to colder conditions today has brought new snow and fresh to strong North to North-Easterly winds. The freezing level is around 500 metres. ObservedSnowStability: A light general cover of new snow exists above 400 metres. Unstable accumulations of windslab are forming in sheltered summit gullies and on steeper lee slopes, mainly above 900 metres. A small overnight wet snow event was noted on a Northerly aspect at 1000 metres. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
