Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs require caution.

In the last few days wind slabs formed in all aspects. They represent the main danger. Caution is to be exercised in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls above approximately 2200 m. Even single backcountry tourers can release avalanches in some places, including medium-sized ones.

Snowpack Structure

Snow depths vary greatly at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions, depending on the infuence of the wind. The weather conditions fostered a weakening of the snowpack in particular on very steep slopes. The fresh and older wind slabs are lying on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack in all aspects at high altitude. Whumpfing sounds and the formation of shooting cracks when stepping on the snowpack confirm the unfavourable bonding of the snowpack.

Tendency

Wind slabs require caution.
