Over a foot of new snow, with even more expected overnight, is fueling this slab avalanche problem. The issue will likely worsen as you climb into higher elevations, especially in areas where wind has created deeper, more dangerous drifts. However, don’t overlook the potential for instability on slopes that haven’t been affected by the wind. Convex rolls and unsupported slopes are especially suspect.
Pay attention to red flags like whumpfing, shooting cracks, or recent avalanches—these are clear signs that if you find the same snowpack structure on a steep enough slope, you could trigger an avalanche. Use tools like small test slopes, uptrack tests, and hand shears to identify these slabs and evaluate how well they’re bonded to the layers below.
With ongoing cool temperatures, moderate snowfall, and steady winds, the safer choice for Monday is to steer clear of steep upper elevation slopes while this problem heals. Lower-angle sheltered terrain will have lower avalanche danger and the riding should be more enjoyable.

A skier triggered avalanche in the Snoqualmie Pass Zone on Sunday. This avalanche broke 2' deep and propagated a good distance across the slope.
