This time of year, the sun tracks higher in the sky and delivers more direct radiation to all aspects, allowing snow surface conditions to warm and soften more rapidly. Lower elevations generally lack the volume of snow needed to produce dangerous avalanches below 4,500 feet, but above that mark, harbor a mature isothermic snowpack that becomes progressively more stubborn to failure as the spring wears on. Upper and middle elevation terrain still have bountiful snow coverage and hence greater chances for more consequential wet snow hazards to develop.Diligently monitor changes on the surfaces and assess your route choices carefully. Be prepared to adjust plans if you observe evidence that conditions are deteriorating such as a rapid transition from firm and supportable snow to moist and punchy surfaces, wet snow shedding naturally from steep rocky terrain, or small point releases triggered beneath your feet or machines. Once triggered, wet loose avalanches can travel surprisingly far distances down slope, carrying and gaining momentum and volume as they progress into lower elevations with even warmer and wetter snow than where they initially released. These avalanches will be the most consequential and hazardous in areas where they might carry you toward or into terrain traps like narrow ravines with steep sidewalls, cliff bands, abrupt slope angle transitions, or dense timber.
The danger will rise during the day as sun exposure and the ambient air temperature increase. Observing snow shed around cliff bands and rocks is one of your first clues that wet hazards are developing. Photo from the East Cabinets.
