Highlights

Wet loose avalanches will become possible on steep slopes as the snow softens. Deep, slushy snow and recent avalanche activity indicate hazardous conditions. Get an early start, monitor the surface as it warms, and reduce your exposure to steep slopes with wet surface snow.

A particularly weak refreeze overnight means that surfaces will soften quickly this morning as the sun comes out and temperatures rise. Wet loose activity will be possible today on all aspects. The best way to minimize exposure to this hazard will be to start and end your tour early. Unsupportable wet snow, rollerballs, and recent avalanches indicate that surface snow is already too wet, and it’s time to move to slopes with lower slope angles and minimal overhead hazards.

Avalanche Discussion

Cloudy skies and warm temperatures overnight prevented a substantial refreeze. Waining coverage and wet snow will be the story of the day. Wet loose avalanches are the main concern across the compass rose, and avalanches could gouge deep into the snowpack. At this point, wet slab avalanche activity is highly unlikely. However, an outlier event isn't impossible. Timing remains your most effective tool for avoiding avalanches and finding the best skiing and riding. Start your mountain adventures early and plan to be back at the trailhead before the heat of the day.  Additional hazards more typical of late spring are worth thinking about as well. Rockfall, cornice fall, and glide cracks have all been observed over the last few days. Expect some unsupportable wet snow, which could make travel difficult and time-consuming in either direction.

While conditions in the mountains certainly come with some challenges, recent observations have also reported favorable skiing and riding conditions in some areas. Getting an early start, building a tour plan with several options, and keeping an open mind will help stack the cards in your favor.
