Highlights

Most slopes are generally safe from avalanches. Very stubborn weak snow layers sit underneath a stiff slab overlaid by a firm surface crust making it difficult for a rider or machine to provoke a failure. If you choose to travel in steep, complex terrain, use safe travel protocol and recognize that a small, isolated avalanche can be bad in the wrong terrain.

    The various persistent weak layers we have been tracking so far this season, faceted rain crusts and surface hoar, are now buried 2 to 3+ feet deep in the snowpack. Regardless of weak layer flavor, they have been trending less reactive recently and appear very stubborn to fail. The generally mild weather followed by cold nights over the last week has promoted significant settlement in the upper snowpack, and the slab is now much stiffer. This makes it more difficult for a rider or machine to penetrate deep enough into the snowpack to impact buried weak layers. Throw in a snowpack capping surface crust and this adds more reinforcement to the stubborn slab.

    While we cannot rule out every slope as “totally” free from all avalanche hazards, you could encounter an isolated area that might behave differently. Continue to use safe travel habits while moving in the mountains, and pay attention to how deep you or your machine sinks into the snow if the surface softens from daytime warming.

    A large natural avalanche that was probably triggered by rapidly warming temperatures following an extended period of cold, snowy weather. The slide failed on a northeast aspect around 5,350 feet, and we estimated the crown around 4 feet deep, likely failing on a buried persistent weak layer.

Avalanche Discussion

Until we receive a new load on top of the snowpack, avalanche conditions will not change all that much. Firm and refrozen surfaces may not make for the most pleasant riding experience, but it is making it more difficult to trigger an avalanche. As you move through the mountains, expect anywhere from a breakable to supportive crust all the way to tippy top elevations. If you migrate toward steeper, more complex terrain, pay attention to how the snow surface changes and factor the “what-if” scenario.

The few places where you could provoke a failure in one of our very stubborn weak snow layers would be where the slab above is shallow and the surface either has no crust or it is thin enough that you can easily break through. A machine trenching into the snowpack - especially around exposed rocks or below cliffs - could add slightly more stress and influence to weaker snow layers than a human and provoke a slide. Depending on how connected adjacent terrain is to where the failure occurs could dictate potential avalanche size.

It may look and feel like early-spring, but the snowpack still has a bit more complexity to it than a typical spring snowpack.
