Highlights

Dangerous avalanche conditions exist. Human-triggered avalanches up to two feet deep are likely in steep terrain above 9,000 feet. Wind-loaded slopes are most dangerous, but avalanches will be possible on steep, sheltered slopes on the north half of the compass. Triggering avalanches from below or next to steep slopes will be possible. Use caution around steep slopes and consider the consequences if the slope avalanches. Avoid terrain traps.

    Weak snow is buried 1-2 feet below the surface. Triggering an avalanche large enough to bury a person is likely in very steep, shaded terrain above 9,000’. Recent snow is stressing weak layers and increasing the likelihood of a rider triggering a large avalanche. Steep, sheltered, northerly-facing slopes harbor the weakest snow and are the most dangerous. Other aspects could also produce avalanches and should not be ruled out. You may not see signs of instability like recent avalanches or hear collapsing before triggering a large avalanche. Remotely triggering a large avalanche above you from gentler terrain below is a real possibility. Give yourself a margin of safety around steep slopes today.

    These slabs were triggered by snowmobilers near Grouse Mountain last week. Expect similar, but deeper, avalanche activity today with additional snowfall in the past 24 hours.

    Over the last 3 days, Togwotee has received 10-12 inches of snow. Moderate south and west winds have redistributed this snow across a variety of aspects and formed wind slabs up to 18 inches deep on leeward slopes. These slabs may be sensitive to the weight of a rider in steep, wind-loaded terrain today. Wind slabs have the potential to step down to deeper weak layers in very steep terrain features on the north half of the compass. If this occurs, avalanches may break deeper and wider than expected.

    Watch for stiff drifts and shooting cracks below ridges and rocky outcrops.

Avalanche Discussion

There is some uncertainty regarding the distribution of weak layers on Togwotee. Dig down in the top 1-2 feet of snow and see if you can find buried surface hoar and/or sugary facets that are left over from the January drought. Please send us some pictures and let us know where you find this weak snow. If digging around isn’t part of the plan today, I would go ahead and assume that weak layers exist on that steep slope you’re thinking about riding and steer clear. There’s plenty of soft snow on lower-angle slopes to enjoy right now. Keep an eye uphill if you traverse below any steep slopes that are connected to the trail or low angle terrain that you are on and don’t stop or regroup in any runout zones. It’s a good day to choose the conservative option around consequential terrain.
