Highlights

As avalanche and weather conditions begin to settle down, approach steeper slopes with caution. Look for evidence of wind-affected snow where you find it, triggering a wind slab is still likely. Similarly, in wind-sheltered areas, investigate the bond of fresh snow to the snow below before committing to slopes over 35 degrees.

Wind-affected snow is beginning to heal but should be easy to find especially at upper elevations.  Fresh wind slabs will have formed further below ridgelines and even on open slopes below treeline due to the recent extreme winds.  Identify wind-affected slopes by looking for textured or wind stiffened snow and cornices. Where you see these signs stick to slopes under 35 degrees and avoid steep start zones such as slopes near ridge crests. Cornices will be large and may be easy to trigger along ridgelines.  Give them a wide berth as they often break further back than you expect.  

Temperatures will rise across the region Monday and increase the likelihood for loose wet avalanche activity especially in areas that did not see loose wet activity on Sunday. Use clues such as rising temps, sunny skies, and water and snow shedding from trees as your first clue that loose wet avalanches may be following. While we expect these slides to remain isolated to very steep slopes, they could entrain snow and grow larger. If you see these clues, choose lower-angle terrain and shadier slopes. Use extra caution above terrain traps like cliffs and creeks.

Observers just east of White Pass saw evidence of recent large avalanches that released earlier in the week.  The avalanches were not as deep or widespread as in zones further north near and east of the Cascade crest.  We still have plenty of uncertainty about deeper weaker layers that may exist in the snowpack. Deep and large natural avalanches were observed in the Crystal backcountry over the weekend. This suggests that deeper instabilities remain in the snowpack. Limit your exposure to large open slopes and favor terrain below 35 degrees. Though these deep avalanches are unlikely, we have evidence to believe that they linger in the snowpack and if they occur they will be devastating.

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
