Highlights

The general avalanche hazard is MODERATE above an elevation of 8,500. Buried layers of weak faceted snow persist. Tuesday a snowmobiler was partially buried after triggering a slab avalanche on a southeast aspect in the upper portion of the Split Rock Creek drainage. Similar events are possible today on a variety of aspects at the higher elevations. Warming temperatures will increase the likelihood for humans, especially those on snowmachines, to trigger slab avalanches. Below 8,500 feet the hazard is Low and avalanches are not expected.

    Weak faceted snow persists in the snowpack. In some areas this snow exists as layers that vary in thickness while in shallow areas the entire snowpack can be faceted. Consolidated snow resting on these layers can be triggered by backcountry enthusiasts. These slabs could be shallow and small in size or could release to depths of 30 inches. Steep northerly aspects above an elevation of 9,000 feet are capable of producing dangerous full depth avalanches.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )One more day of the same weather is forecast before the flow aloft backs to the southwest ahead of an approaching trough. On Wednesday skies will be mostly sunny with temperatures rising into the 30s. Winds will be backing from the west to the southwest at speeds of 25 to 30 with higher gusts. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE in terrain with greater than three feet of settled snow. Slab avalanches up to 30 inches in depth could be human triggered on some very steep slopes. Some potential remains for human triggered full depth slab avalanches in steep northerly terrain above an elevation of 9,000 feet.
