Avalanche Summary

An Avalanche Watch is in effect for the southern Sangre de Cristo Range. The avalanche danger will rise to HIGH (4 of 5) overnight Friday and last into Saturday as an upslope storm brings heavy snowfall to the mountains.

Anticipate avalanche danger to increase as snow accumulates later in the day Friday. You could trigger an avalanche in wind-drifted snow. The most dangerous slopes are where you find more than about 8 inches of drifted snow. Cracking in recently drifted snow is a sign of an unstable slope and an indication to move to lower-angle wind-sheltered terrain.
