Snowpack

Last week's fresh snow has largely settled. Dry slab avalanches are still possible, especially at high altitudes on steep north-facing slopes.

The old snowpack is water-saturated on southern slopes up to the high Alpine regions and on eastern and western slopes up to around 3000 m. On northern slopes, most of the old snowpack is water-saturated up to between 2600 and 2800 m. Wet avalanches, some very large, may still occur at these altitudes, because some weak layers deep in the snowpack are still dry and will become significantly less stable when they first become saturated. Such deep weak layers are particularly prevalent in the inneralpine regions.

The night to Tuesday will be partly clear. The daytime will mainly be sunny. Cumulus cloud will develop in the afternoon and there may be isolated showers.

In the north, conditions were only partly clear overnight and there was showery precipitation, while it was mainly sunny during the day. In the south, conditions were cloudy overnight and there was some precipitation, while there were sunny intervals during the day.

Outlook

Conditions will mainly be clear overnight to Wednesday and Thursday. The mornings will be mainly sunny. Cumulus cloud will develop in the afternoons and there may be isolated showers and thunderstorms. The zero-degree level will rise to around 3200 m on Wednesday and to 3400 m on Thursday. Winds will be light on both days.

The risk of dry avalanches will continue to decrease, The risk of wet avalanches will increase significantly over the course of each day. Ski touring should be started very early and finished early.
