Avalanche Summary

No avalanches were observed or reported in the Yoho forecast region today.

Snowpack Summary

Surface hoar development to 4mm on can be found on shaded aspects below treeline. Suncrust exist on steep solar aspects and isolated wind slabs can be found in the high alpine. There is 10-25 cm of facetted snow over the Feb 3 crust. In shallower snowpack areas weak facet layers can be found in the mid and lower pack.

Weather Summary

Isolated flurries for Tuesday night and Wednesday with total accumulations less then 5 cm by end of day on Wednesday. Ridgetop winds are forecast to be light to moderate from the west. Freezing Levels will rise to 1800 m on Wednesday.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Watch for wind-loaded pockets especially around ridgecrest and in extreme terrain.

Problems

Wind Slabs

Wind Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) formed by the wind. Wind typically transports snow from the upwind sides of terrain features and deposits snow on the downwind side. Wind slabs are often smooth and rounded and sometimes sound hollow, and can range from soft to hard. Wind slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
