Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs are to be evaluated with care and prudence. From early morning more frequent medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large moist and wet avalanches are possible.

As a consequence of new snow and a strong northwesterly wind, avalanche prone wind slabs formed adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls as well as at elevated altitudes. The new snow and wind slabs can be released easily or naturally in particular on north to east to southeast facing aspects above approximately 2400 m. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular in steep terrain and at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. Avalanches can be released by a single winter sport participant and reach large size in isolated cases. Gradual increase in danger of dry and wet avalanches as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation. This applies in particular at low and intermediate altitudes.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 25 to 30 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, fell in the last three days above approximately 2000 m. The wind has transported some snow. Fresh wind slabs are poorly bonded with the old snowpack in particular on north to east to south facing aspects. The old snowpack will be subject to considerable local variations. Sunshine and high temperatures will give rise as the day progresses to increasing moistening of the snowpack in particular on steep sunny slopes.

Tendency

Significant warming. From late morning the likelihood of moist and wet avalanches being released will increase quickly.
