Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs and weakly bonded old snow require caution.

Fresh wind slabs can be released even by a single winter sport participant. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular on northwest to north to east facing aspects above approximately 2000 m and adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. At elevated altitudes the avalanche prone locations are more prevalent. Avalanches can be released in the old snowpack, even by small loads in isolated cases, especially on very steep shady slopes above approximately 2000 m, as well as on very steep east and west facing slopes above approximately 2400 m. Caution is to be exercised at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. As a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation individual small to medium-sized moist avalanches are possible. As the day progresses the likelihood of avalanches being released will increase a little. Backcountry touring calls for careful route selection. Experience in the assessment of avalanche danger is advisable.

Snowpack Structure

As a consequence of new snow and a strong wind, sometimes avalanche prone wind slabs formed. The wind slabs have bonded poorly with the old snowpack. In some places wind slabs are lying on a hard crust. Faceted weak layers exist in the old snowpack, especially on shady slopes above approximately 2000 m, as well as on east and west facing slopes above approximately 2400 m. Sunshine and high temperatures will give rise as the day progresses to increasing moistening of the snowpack on sunny slopes. These conditions will bring about a slow weakening of the snowpack.

Tendency

Significant warming. In some regions increase in danger of moist avalanches from late morning.
