Avalanche Activity

Fresh wind slabs require caution. Gradual increase in danger of moist and wet avalanches in the course of the day.

As a consequence of the strong northwesterly wind, fresh snow drift accumulations formed. The mostly small wind slabs remain in some cases prone to triggering at high altitude. These can be released by a single winter sport participant in isolated cases, especially adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas on very steep slopes. Restraint should be exercised because avalanches can sweep people along and give rise to falls. In high Alpine regions these avalanche prone locations are more prevalent. As the day progresses as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation there will be an increase in the danger of moist and wet avalanches within the current danger level. In particular on very steep sunny slopes small and, in isolated cases, medium-sized wet avalanches are possible as the day progresses.

Snowpack Structure

In these regions in all altitude zones only a small amount of snow is lying for the time of year. On sunny slopes as well as below approximately 2300 m from a snow sport perspective, in most cases insufficient snow is lying. At high altitudes and in high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. Individual weak layers exist in the snowpack on shady slopes.

Tendency

The danger of moist and wet avalanches will already exist in the early morning, in the event of an overcast night especially.
