Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Existing moderately bonded windslab will be present with fresh accumulations of unstable windslab forming overnight and during the day. Areas affected will be in steep wind sheltered locations mainly on North-West through North to East aspects above 850 metres. Other aspects may be affected through crossloading. Cornices will be fragile on these aspects also. At the end of the period, as temperatures rise, there will be increased wet snow instabilities. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Showers continue through the period, initially falling as snow above 300 metres this evening and then to increasingly higher elevations as the freezing level rises, going above the summits during the afternoon with rain at all elevations. Winds will be strong to gale force from mainly the South-West. Observed Weather Influences: A damp morning with rain and snow, falling above 600 metres, becoming showery with some brighter intervals into the afternoon. Winds were fresh to strong from the South-West. ObservedSnowStability: The existing snowpack has thawed and consolidated at all elevations becoming moist and generally soft, improving stability. Moderately bonded windslab remains in deeper accumulations which are mainly in steep locations on North-West through North to East aspects above 850 metres. Cornices remain on these aspects also. Fresh snow accumulations are building above 600 metres on most aspects with a thin layer of soft windslab in sheltered locations above 850 metres. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
