Highlights

The old snowpack is stable, and avalanche problems are related to the snow that has fallen this week. It may be possible to trigger avalanches in fresh wind-drifted snow in wind-sheltered terrain features. It may be longer periods of sunshine in the afternoon, and if that is the case, small avalanches can occur in steep terrain where the snow is heated for the first time.

Avalanche Activity

The old snowpack is stable, and avalanche problems are related to the snow that has fallen this week. It may be possible to trigger avalanches in fresh wind-drifted snow in wind-sheltered terrain features. It may be longer periods of sunshine in the afternoon, and if that is the case, small avalanches can occur in steep terrain where the snow is heated for the first time.

Tendency

Avalanches can easilly be triggered where there is fresh wind-drifted snow. The greatest snow accumulations are found in terrain features facing south and east.

During prolonged periods of sunshine, warming of the new snow may lead to avalanches in steep terrain, especially where the snow is being warmed for the first time.

Be aware of near-surface faceting within the new snow. Weather observations indicate that conditions are favourable for the rapid development of a new weak layer, but this has not yet been confirmed.
