Very strong winds will rapidly transport new snow and quickly build fresh wind slabs. With strong winds and heavy snow in the forecast, expect the size of wind slabs to increase during the day as well as the likelihood of triggering a wind slab. Look for evidence of wind transported snow. Active blowing snow, cornice development, and stiff or textured snow surfaces are all signs that you could trigger a wind slab. Where you see these clues avoid travel on lee slopes steeper than 35 degrees. Choose ridges, scoured slopes, and low angle terrain to stay safe. Wind slabs will be most likely on slopes near and above treeline, but winds are forecast to be strong enough that wind slabs may begin to form below treeline as well.
