Snowpack

At high altitudes, the last few days' snowdrift accumulations are still prone to triggering in places. In the west and north, occasional avalanches may also be triggered at the transition from last week's new fallen snow to the old snow surface.

In southern Valais, Grisons and Ticino, there are weak layers in the lower part of the snowpack and, in these regions, avalanches may be triggered in drifted snow and sometimes also sweep away deeper layers of the snowpack. Isolated avalanches may also be triggered directly in deep layers, especially in the Engadine and south of there.

Gliding avalanches, some large, are still possible.

Weather forecast to Thursday

Conditions will be cloudy in the north and west until Thursday morning and there may be a little precipitation, falling as snow above approximately 1800 m. There will be sunny spells over the course of the day. Conditions will be mostly sunny in the inneralpine regions of Valais and Grisons and in the south.

Conditions in the mountains were quite sunny with patches of cloud. On the southern flank of the Alps, excluding the Val Müstair, there was extensive low cloud cover with an upper boundary at 2000 m. A little light snow fell locally down to low altitudes.

Outlook

Friday will be sunny in the mountains. Winds will be light to moderate and will shift to the southwest. The zero-degree level will rise in the north to around 2800 m, and a light to moderate foehn wind from the south will develop in the afternoon. On Saturday, there will be sunny spells in the north with increasing cloud cover from the west in the afternoon. Cloud cover will be very heavy in the south. There may be a little local precipitation, especially in the Jura and the south. The snowfall level will be 1800 m in the north and 1200 m in the south. Overnight to Saturday, there will be moderate southerly winds, with strong winds at times in northern regions exposed to the foehn wind.

The danger of dry avalanches will hardly change at first but may rise slightly on Saturday at high altitudes and in northern regions exposed to the foehn wind. Fresh snowdrift accumulations will be fairly small but prone to triggering. The danger of moist avalanches will increase a little during the day. There will also continue to be a possibility of gliding avalanches.
