Snowpack Structure

The surface of the snowpack will freeze to form a strong crust only at high altitudes and will soften earlier than the day before. Especially steep shady slopes high altitudes: Individual weak layers exist in the centre of the snowpack. At elevated altitudes snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. In general, snow conditions in many regions are still good and are in line with or above the seasonal average. At low altitude and on sunny slopes the snowpack will soften quickly.

Tendency

On Thursday it will be warm.

Avalanche Activity

The danger of moist and wet avalanches will already increase in the late morning.

Rise of the zero-degree level up to 3400 m. The early morning will see favourable conditions, but the danger of wet and gliding avalanches will increase later. As a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation the avalanche prone locations will become more prevalent from the late morning. These conditions will cause a rapid weakening of the snowpack in particular on steep sunny slopes. Medium-sized natural avalanches are possible here. Increase in danger of moist and wet snow slides in particular in steep rocky terrain. Backcountry tours and off-piste skiing should be started and concluded very early. Especially on very steep northwest, north and northeast facing slopes avalanches can be triggered in the weakly bonded old snow. This applies in particular in case of a large load.
