Avalanche Activity

During the course of the night as a consequence of the snowfall there will be an increase in the avalanche danger to level 4 (high).

Above approximately 800 m snow will fall until midday. As a consequence of new snow and a moderate wind from easterly directions, avalanche prone wind slabs formed. In all aspects and at intermediate and high altitudes medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large avalanches are to be expected. The prevalence of avalanche prone locations and likelihood of triggering will increase from the second half of the night. The peak of avalanche activity will be reached in the late morning probably. Avalanches can reach valley bottoms and in some places endanger exposed transportation routes. Ski touring and other off-piste activities, including snowshoe hiking, call for extensive experience in the assessment of avalanche danger.

Snowpack Structure

The old snowpack is well consolidated and its surface consists of loosely bonded snow lying on a melt-freeze crust that is strong in many cases. Above approximately 800 m snow will fall until Sunday over a wide area. The new snow is bonding only slowly with the old snowpack. The easterly wind will transport the new snow significantly. In particular at intermediate and high altitudes a lot of snow is lying for the time of year.

Tendency

Once the snowfall has ended, the avalanche activity will only slowly decrease.
