Avalanche Activity
Moderate avalanche danger will be encountered over a wide area
Avalanches can in isolated cases be released in near-surface layers of the snowpack and reach medium size. This applies in particular on very steep slopes in little used backcountry terrain. In high Alpine regions the avalanche prone locations are more prevalent. The avalanche prone locations are barely recognisable, even to the trained eye. Careful route selection is recommended.
Snowpack Structure
In southern Valais and in the inneralpine and southern regions of Grisons, weak layers exist deep in the snowpack. Last week, individual large avalanches were triggered in these layers by people, in some cases remotely. In the other regions the bonding of the snowpack is more favourable. Nonetheless, weak layers that remain prone to triggering in isolated cases exist here as well, in particular in northern Valais, the western part of the northern flank of the Alps and northern Ticino. On the northern flank of the Alps in particular, individual gliding avalanches can still occur. Exceptionally little snow is lying in the south; many measuring stations are recording the lowest ever amounts for this time of year. In view of the thin and in many cases faceted snowpack, on glaciers there is currently an elevated risk of falling into a crevasse, especially in the Zermatt and Saas Fee regions.
Weather Synopsis
After a clear night it was sunny during the day. Only in Ticino was it cloudy until the middle of the day. Fresh snow: - Temperature: At midday at 2000 m: about +2 °C in the west, -2 °C in the east, and -8 °C in the south Wind: Moderate during the night, mostly light during the day, from the north After a clear night, it will be fairly sunny during the day despite some high-altitude cloud. Fresh snow: - Temperature: At midday at 2000 m: between +1 °C in the west and -2 °C in the east Wind: During the first half of the night at elevated altitudes, moderate to strong from the north, otherwise mostly light
Tendency
Each of the coming nights will be only partly clear, but largely dry. Each of the coming days will be fairly sunny, but on Friday afternoon it will be cloudy in the south. The avalanche danger will continue to decrease, but only slowly in the inneralpine regions.
