Highlights

As avalanche and weather conditions begin to settle down, approach steeper slopes with caution. Look for evidence of wind-affected snow where you find it, triggering a wind slab is still likely. Similarly, in wind-sheltered areas, investigate the bond of fresh snow to the snow below before committing to slopes over 35 degrees.

    Sun breaks are possible Sunday and warmer temperatures than we have experienced recently will be certain. If the temperatures rise above freezing, or wherever the sun shines, loose wet avalanches will be likely. Look for rollerballs on the snow surface, water dripping from trees, and trees shedding snow as the first sign that the snow surface is becoming weak. If you see these signs, choose terrain less than 35 degrees in angle and move towards shadier slopes. Use extra caution above terrain traps like cliffs and creeks.

    Extreme winds and significant new snow over the last few days have built large wind slabs. While these slabs are beginning to heal, it will still be possible to trigger a slab on wind drifted slopes. Look for recent cornices, stiff and textured snow surfaces. Where you see these things, choose slopes below 35 degrees. Winds have been strong enough to create wind slabs in unusual locations and below treeline, so pay attention to the snow surface for clues about where they might exist. Shooting cracks in the snow are a sure sign that you could trigger a wind slab.

Avalanche Discussion

A freezing rain crust formed last Monday up to roughly 7000'. The snowpack has grown by around 20" of consolidated snow since then. Strong to extreme winds and cool temps have been the norm building slabs and producing avalanches. The snowpack is healing from a non-stop week of wind and snow. Be cautious in wind effected terrain at higher elevations and consider how the recent snow is bonded before committing to steep slopes in wind-sheltered areas.

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
