Avalanche Summary

You may trigger an avalanche where you find recent wind-drifted snow that rests on top of weak snow near the ground. You will most likely find these slopes at upper elevations or exposed ridgelines. In sheltered areas, keep an eye out for shooting cracks or collapsing as a sign that a weak buried layer of surface hoar is one to two feet from the surface, which can be an issue.

Even a small avalanche can have big consequences if you go for a ride over cliffs, into gullies, or through trees.
