Regions: Glacier.

A widespread avalanche cycle with numerous size 2.5 and 3.0 occurred yesterday following intense snowfall and wind. Another period of heavy snow is forecast tonight and avalanche danger will rise on Wednesday. Fidelity HN24 10 cm.

Avalanche Problems

Wind Slabs

A period of strong wind and intense snowfall yesterday produced wind slabs below ridge crests, at terrain features and on cross loaded slopes. Slabs formed over a new layer of surface hoar at elevations up to 2300m.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, South.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Likely

Expected Size: 1 - 3

Persistent Slabs

The surface hoar buried Dec 11 is a persistent weak layer that presents a concern as the load increases over the week. Avalanches failing on the surface hoar buried Dec 24th could step down to this layer resulting in very large avalanches.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, South, South West, West.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Unlikely - Possible

Expected Size: 2 - 4

Deep Persistent Slabs

A weak basal crust is present in the alpine and was responsible for large avalanches. The deep layers are generally unreactive but may be triggered from thin snowpack areas. Glide cracks are forming at all elevations. One failed at 1100m Dec 22.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine.

Likelihood: Unlikely

Expected Size: 3 - 4
