Regions: Kananaskis.

Colder temperatures are solidifying our spring like snowpack. The important consideration at this time of year is solar radiation and quality of overnight freeze. Be sure to evaluate these conditions throughout the day as you travel.

Confidence

Moderate - Uncertainty is due to the timing or intensity of solar radiation and its effect on the snowpack.

Weather Forecast

Cooler temps for the next few days with light flurries. Winds will be into the moderate range out of the SW.

Avalanche Summary

No new avalanche activity

Snowpack Summary

Colder temperatures remained all day on Thursday and as a result, the snowpack that was moist was frozen in throughout the day. Expect a frozen surface on all aspects and elevations except true north polar aspects above 2300m. Here you will likely find dry snow and the occasional windslab in open areas.

Terrain and Travel

  • Avoid sun exposed slopes when the solar radiation is strong, especially if snow is moist or wet
  • Cornices become weak with daytime heating or solar exposure.
  • Small avalanches can have serious consequences in extreme terrain. Carefully evaluate your line for wind slab hazard before you commit to it.

Avalanche Problems

Loose Wet

Problem exists in steep Below Treeline features as the crust breaks down with day time warming. Solar aspects at all elevations are also subject to this avalanche problem whenever the sun shines.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: All elevations.

Likelihood: Likely

Expected Size: 1 - 1.5
