Eastside Region

Generally stable avalanche conditions persist. Exercise caution in exposed or extreme terrain. Anticipate variable surface conditions and adjust your travel plans if you encounter signs of unstable snow.

High pressure continues to dominate in the Eastern Sierra, and it's starting to feel a little like Groundhog Day. There was a little excitement overnight as winds shifted to the north and increased in speed. However, winds are expected to become light and shift back to the west as the sun comes out.

With little change to the stability picture, the main focus for backcountry enthusiasts remains on variable surface conditions. Expect the whole spectrum if you head into the hills today.  Depending on where you wish to travel, you are likely to find melt-freeze crusts, windboard, breakable crust, satrugi, and areas of softer snow in protected northerly terrain. Solar slopes are melting fast, especially below treeline and in the southern portion of the forecast area. Creeks are open at lower elevations, and finding a decent spot to cross can be tricky. In many areas, access is becoming more difficult.

Plan for variable conditions and consider specialized tools, such as ski or boot crampons, depending on your route.
