Highlights

Triggering a large avalanche 2-4 feet deep on steep, shady slopes above 8,000 feet is possible. The danger is highest on slopes facing west through north through east. Elevated hazard also exists in steep rocky terrain or slopes previously loaded by the wind. Evaluate steep slopes carefully. Watch for loose snow sloughing in steep upper elevation terrain by this afternoon if snowfall continues.

    Weak snow from the January drought is buried 2-4 feet deep. More recent storm interfaces are buried 1-2 feet and have shown some instability. The snowpack continues to adjust to recent loading and you might not get any warning signs before triggering a large avalanche. Danger is highest above 8,000’ on northerly slopes and in steep rocky terrain. Identify areas that might hold weak snow and dig down to look before committing to steep slopes. In areas that you are unsure about, avoid steep terrain.

    The Tetons received up to 4 inches of snow overnight with several more expected today. Winds have been light. Most likely this will not increase the avalanche danger but watch for loose snow sloughing in steep terrain and if winds ramp up sooner than expected look for drifting snow as small, shallow wind slabs may form by this evening. New snow could move quickly on slick crusts that were recently buried.

    A very large skier triggered avalanche that occurred near Phillips Pass on 2/21/2026. The 5th rider on the slope triggered the smaller slab near the ridge that then triggered a much larger avalanche below the cliff band.

Avalanche Discussion

Warm temperatures and rain at low-elevation slopes have saturated remaining snow. Use caution around very steep slopes with enough snow to slide. This includes small terrain traps where you might entrain more wet snow than you think while travelling into and out of the mountains.
