Highlights

Today, very dangerous avalanche conditions are expected to persist. The recent accumulation of storm snow, interfaced with early-season old snow, has resulted in a less cohesive layer.  The combination of recent snow and strong winds has led to signifigant wind loading of ridges at upper elevations. It is crucial to exercise cautious route-finding. Travel in or near avalanche terrain is not recommended. 

***Yesterday, there was a fatal avalanche accident near Stevens Peak in the Silver Valley. Rescue and recovery are continuing today.     Up to a foot of new snow  fell on Thursday and will contribute to dangerous avalanche conditions today.   With additonal overnight snow and strong winds, natural avalanches are likely and human triggered avalanches are very likely on all aspects, on slopes over 30 degrees, at treeline and above today.  Though less snow is present at lower elevations, below treeline, potential for storm snow avalanches still exists.  Allow several days for new snow to stabilize befor committing to avalanche terrain or slopes connected to avalanche terrain. 

Avalanche Discussion

Over the past week, the region has experienced continuous snowfall, with some mountain areas receiving up to 4 feet of snow. While this has positively impacted backcountry conditions, it has significantly complicated the snowpack, leading to an increased avalanche hazard.

The interface between the existing snowpack and the recent storm snow has become a problematic layer. Cohesion between the old and new snow has not fully developed, introducing uncertainty in stability across the Selkirk and Cabinet Mountains. In sheltered areas, these layers are buried 2-3 feet below the snow surface. Ridges, gullies, and exposed alpine areas are loaded due to recent storms and strong winds.

TRAVEL ADVICE: It is strongly advised to avoid travel near and into avalanche terrain. Steer clear of slopes exceeding 30 degrees and maintain a safe distance from avalanche runout zones. Despite the enticing bottomless powder conditions found yesterday, particularly favorable for snowmobiling and sledding, it is crucial not to be lured into avalanche-prone terrain.

Additionally, anticipate cold temperatures and dangerously cold wind chills, potentially reaching as low as 25 to 50 below zero. The National Weather Service warns of the potential for near or record-breaking low temperatures in our zones. Cold temperatures can complicate even the smallest setbacks. If you decide to venture out today, adopting a conservative mindset will be essential for safety.
