Recent snowfall ranges 6 to 8 inches across the Bitterroot Mountains. Strong winds easily distributed the storm snow into thicker and stiffer slabs on leeward-facing slopes. Erratic and swirling wind may have created a complex distribution of fresh slabs across aspects and at varying locations – deeper drifts may be lurking lower in the terrain than usual. With such a significant difference in hardness of the faceted grains and surface hoar below the new storm slab, sensitivity will likely remain elevated for an extended period. Choose conservative, low-angle terrain well away from steeper, bigger overhead hazards to account for the uncertainty of triggering a slide from a distance.

It will be very easy to trigger avalanches in the new snow. Fresh slabs of snow are overloading fragile weak snow layers directly below. Bitterroot Mountains. January 21, 2025.
