You can trigger avalanches in the upper snowpack from recent snow and on weak layers near the ground. Avalanches in the upper snowpack are most concerning on recently drifted terrain. Carefully examine recent loading patterns to identify slopes with significant drifting. Avalanches that fail deep in the snowpack are a concern in areas with shallow snowpack depths less than about 5 feet. Examples of those areas could be Whetstone, Mount Crested Butte, lower Brush Creek, and lower Cement Creek or windward terrain and slopes that previously avalanched this winter. Use caution and choose more conservative terrain where you find a shallower or highly variable snowpack.
In the Southeast Mountains, faceted weak layers are buried 2 to 6 feet deep and are becoming more difficult to trigger. Slabs are most easily triggered where they are thinner, which is most common in shallow areas near Crested Butte and CB South, or in wind-affected terrain. Be cautious of windward terrain features with variable depths, rock bands, and slopes where slabs are only a few feet thick. The safest riding is where the snowpack is uniform and consistently deeper than about 5 feet (150 cm).
