Avalanche Activity

The large quantity of fresh snow as well as the often large wind slabs can be released easily or naturally.

A lot of snow will fall over a wide area. This applies in particular in the afternoon. Large quantities of fresh snow and the wind-drifted snow can be released naturally in all aspects and generally at intermediate and high altitudes. Many large and, in isolated cases, very large natural avalanches are possible. Avalanches can reach valley bottoms and in some cases endanger exposed transportation routes. Below approximately 2000 m medium-sized to large moist and wet avalanches are possible. The current avalanche situation calls for extensive experience in the assessment of avalanche danger and great restraint.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area over a wide area 50 to 80 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen since Tuesday above approximately 1600 m. A lot of snow will fall from midday over a wide area. As a consequence of new snow and a moderate to strong wind, large wind slabs formed in the last two days in particular in gullies and bowls and behind abrupt changes in the terrain as well as at intermediate and high altitudes. The new snow of last week is lying on a crust on sunny slopes. This snow is lying on soft layers on shady slopes and at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions. Towards its base, the snowpack is fairly homogeneous.
