Weather Forecast

Nocturnal skies on Friday night will be foehn-impacted (windspeeds up to 100 km/hr in the Tauern). Skies overcast widespread. On Saturday, strong-to-stormy southerly foehn winds (gusts in Northern Alps up to 60 km/hr, up to 100 km/hr in the Tauern), clouds from the south lodging against the Main Alpine Ridge, peaks in fog, minor snowfall. Further northwards, sunny windows. At 2000 m: 0-4 degrees, at 3000 m: -5 degrees.

Tendency

On Sunday, enhanced gliding snow problem at intermediate altitudes due to rain impact. At high altitudes, some fresh snow with slight wind impact.

Avalanche Activity

Glide-snow avalanches at any time of day or night

Avalanche danger is moderate below 2400 m, above that altitude danger is low. On steep grass-covered slopes in all aspects which have not yet discharged, glide-snow avalanches can release at any time of day or night, releases medium, even large-sized are possible in high-altitude starting zones where the snowpack is deep. Avoid zones below glide cracks. In few danger zones (on shady slopes above 2400 m) isolated weak layers in the uppermost part of the snowpack can trigger by large additional loading, slab avalanches can grow to medium size, in isolated cases to large size. Caution urged in terrain with danger of falling.

Snowpack Structure

The snowpack is compact and thoroughly wet up to 2000 m, on sunny slopes up to 2600 m, wet down to the ground. On shady slopes above 2400 m, the snowpack still has reserves of cold, thus, loose layers can still weaken the snowpack. On high-alpine north-facing slopes (esp. in Ankogel range) fresh snowdrift accumulations may have been generated by foehn wind.
