Winter conditions have prevailed during the past ten days. Three storms have brought up to three feet of snow to the highest elevations. Settled snow depths at 10,000 feet are estimated to be 15 to 22 inches. Mountain temperatures have been in the teens and 20's. The latest storm began on Thursday and deposited a total of 12 to 15 inches of new snow upon a layer of surface hoar that developed last Tuesday night. This storm was accompanied by strong northwest winds. Avalanches are unlikely, however isolated pockets of new soft slab up to two feet in depth pose a threat to hunters, climbers or skiers who venture into very steep avalanche starting zones with fresh deposits of wind drifted snow. Small avalanches can injure or kill humans. Daily advisories are expected to begin later in the season. Until then weekly snowpack summaries will be issued and advisories may be posted on occasion.
