Highlights
At the mid and upper elevations dense new snow, strong west winds and increasing temperatures have combined to create dangerous conditions. Dense surface slabs up to three feet in depth lie upon lighter density snow and hard old snow surfaces. Rapid loading by west winds is likely to create unstable conditions and cause natural avalanche activity. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended at the upper elevations. At the mid elevations conditions are dangerous. Excellent route finding skills and a conservative approach to avalanche terrain are essential for safe travel. Avalanches are unlikely at the lower elevations.
Avalanche Discussion
The north-northwest flow will bring dryer conditions Tuesday night into Wednesday as high pressure builds into the region. Temperatures will rise from the mid teens to low twenties and winds will back to southwesterly at 20 miles per hour by dawn Wednesday. Snowfall will be light with one or two inches of accumulation expected.The general avalanche hazard above an elevation of 8,000 feet is expected to be CONSIDERABLE Wednesday. Strong winds and new snow have combined to form dense surface slabs up to four feet in depth. Natural avalanche activity is possible and human triggered avalanches are likely in steep avalanche prone terrain. Avalanches are not likely at the lower elevations where the general avalanche hazard is expected to be LOW.
