A Special Avalanche Advisory is in effect for areas around the Grand Mesa. Though slowly decreasing, the avalanche danger remains elevated after a potent storm created dangerous avalanche conditions.
You can trigger an avalanche that breaks within new snow or on the old snow surface about two to three feet deep. Avoid traveling on slopes steeper than around 35 degrees where the surface snow is soft and your feet, skis, or machine sink more than a few inches below the snow surface. Safer travel options exist by sticking to low-angle slopes without steep terrain overhead or staying on sunny slopes that have a hard, supportable crust on the snow surface.
