At the higher elevations, isolated pockets of hard wind slab, with depths up to 12 inches, lie upon sun crusts and faceted snow. Backcountry travelers could trigger these slabs in very steep, avalanche prone terrain. While small, these slides could quickly accelerate and have the potential to carry skiers or riders over cliff bands or into terrain traps. On sunlit aspects, the potential to trigger these slabs will increase as the day warms.
