Avalanche Summary
An Avalanche Watch is in effect for the Ragged, Ruby Range, and the Elk Mountains. HIGH (4 of 5) avalanche danger will develop late Thursday and last into Friday as a potent storm brings strong winds and heavy snowfall.
Strong southwest winds and heavy snowfall rates will build unstable slabs on northwest through east to southeast-facing slopes. As slabs thicken you can easily trigger a large avalanche, some may break several feet deep and cross entire mountain slopes. Avalanche conditions will worsen through the day and into the night. On Thursday, travel in avalanche terrain above treeline is not recommended. That recommendation spreads to lower elevations by Thursday night.
