You can trigger an avalanche large enough to bury you anywhere you find steep slopes with more than about ten inches of new or drifted snow. Avalanches which you trigger in storm snow can break into deeper layers near the ground, making for a more dangerous avalanche. You can trigger avalanches from the bottom of slopes, so give steep terrain above you a wide berth. Slopes less than about thirty degrees steepness without steep terrain above provide safer options.
