Avalanche Summary
New snow will increase your chances of triggering a small avalanche, but it is not enough to increase the overall avalanche hazard.
If you are out traveling in the backcountry and observe 8 inches or more of new snow, identify areas where winds are drifting the new snow into deeper drifts. If that drift sits on old snow below, these areas may be where you can trigger an avalanche on a steep slope. You are most likely to find this set-up above treeline on north, northeast, and east slopes.
